REYKJAVIK, Iceland - Our bus could barely stay in one lane. Furious wind howled and chilly rain splattered against our windows. My sister Mallory and I had just landed in Iceland and were en route from Keflavik Airport to Reykjavik, about 40 minutes away. It was 7:30 in the morning, but it could have been the dead of night. There wasn't a hint of daybreak in the sky.
Were we crazy to visit Iceland in the winter off-season?
Escaping the East Coast of the United States for a colder, darker destination seemed a bit ludicrous. But since the collapse this fall of Iceland's financial system, this tiny island of 300,000 people has turned to tourism to pump money into its floundering economy, and that means cheap options for vacationers. Icelandair has been offering flight and hotel deals. And Iceland's krona is considerably down against the dollar.
